Tow new underground stations

With Line E of the RER suburban express network, two major new transport hubs have been created in Paris, 30 metres beneath the Gare Saint-Lazare and Gare du Nord mainline stations.
Both are structured around a large central passenger concourse comprising a concrete "megastructure" expressing its dual function of supporting the city above and holding back the earth from which it is excavated. The concourse is lit by daylight, supplemented by original hanging and wall-mounted light fittings. The search for enhanced comfort also dictated the use of noble materials including silk-finish concrete for the concourses, polished concrete for the corridors, silk and bush-hammered concrete for the platform ceilings, wood and metal for gangways and stairs, copper for the technical facilities, acoustically treated wood for interstitial spaces and white marble flooring in heavily-used areas.
